Wood Turtle at Kuse Nature Preserve

Wood Turtle

Glyptemys insculpta

This endangered turtle has been seen walking across the yard. It is uncommon and needs to be protected. It has a sculpted carapace or upper shell. The individual scutes on the shell have concentric growth rings that look like those of a tree branch. The plastron or bottom shell is yellow with black blotches at the edges. Skin on the legs and neck may be yellow.

They spend time in the water and on land. They eat berries, worms, greens and invertebrates.

Predators often take their eggs.
