Northern Spring Peeper at Kuse Nature Preserve

Northern Spring Peeper

Pseudacris crucifer crucifer

This tan to brown frog with a darker brown "x" on its back and white underside is only one to one and a half inches long. Males have a yellow throat. They call loudly from swamps and areas surrounding ponds where breeding takes place. Some frogs climb into low shrubs and give their high-pitched jingling calls. Their calls are amplified and their position sometimes allows them to have the effect of ventriloquists so it can be difficult to find their exact location.
