Northern Red-Bellied Snake at Kuse Nature Preserve

Northern Red-Belied Snake

Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata

This small (8-10 inches) snake has a dark gray or brown back and a red or coppery-orange belly. Its young are born from June to September.

The northern red-bellied snake is common throughout the state. On our property several of them can often be found under boards or cardboard in the corner of our garden. Because it likes to eat slugs and beetle larvae it is a welcome visitor.
