Northern Green Frog at Kuse Nature Preserve

Northern Green Frog

Rana clamitans melanota

Green Frogs may be green, brown or tan. They have two raised ridges of skin that begin behind their ears and go down either side of their bodies. Males usually have large eardrums and yellow throats. Females have white throats and smaller eardrums. Underneath they are cream colored or darker.

Their most commonly heard call is like the twang of a banjo string but they also have other sounds.

Eggs are laid in a large flat mass and the male fertilizes them. In three to seven days they hatch. Aquatic larvae of insects and wading birds feast on young tadpoles.

Adult frogs may live at least five years.
