Eastern Gray Tree Frog at Kuse Nature Preserve

Eastern Gray Tree Frog

Hyla versicolor

These frogs can grow to be two and one half inches long and range in color from green to gray or brown with bright yellow or orange under the hind legs. The skin on their backs is rough with darker spots. They have the ability to change their color to match their surroundings. They are commonly found in small trees or shrubs near small bodies of water. They hide in depressions and under leaves when not active. Tadpoles hatch from globules of eggs laid in ponds or puddles. They call from above ground levels in shrubs, trees, or ledges of buildings. Calls can be heard in the evening or at night. Their necks bulge out as they give a prolonged trill. They can sometimes be seen clinging to windows in lighted areas where they catch insects.
